An Intervention is made by SLRCG through Fieldwork: SHRC summons to cop and babu over women's house.
MUMBAI: Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC) has issued summons to principal secretary, state Women & Child Welfare department, along with Raigad superintendent of police asking them to submit a written reply before November 1, for failing to act on poor condition at women's shelter in Karjat where addictive medicines and those beyond their expiry dates were given to inmates.
The MSHRC took up the issue after a woman died at the shelter. No accurate reason for the death was found and shelter staff claimed she died due to a disease, while inmates said she was suffering from typhoid.
The shelter home runs on rented premises in poor condition in a secluded area.
After the death, a team of MSHRC registrar Dr Swarupa Dholam, professor Arvind Tiwari and Devakumar Jacob of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), students of one-year program of LLM at TISS visited the shelter and gave a report after examining details and challenges.
